“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14

On the first Christmas, the Holy One indicated a willingness to have relationship and fellowship with God’s people.

Merry Christmas from Emmaus Ministries. May the Holy Spirit dwelling in us help us to reach out to others and to build meaningful relationships.

  • 600 Walks were hosted in 2018.
  • 70 of those Walks were international.
  • Emerging communities started to spring up in Kenya, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Poland, and Bulgaria.
  • Face to Face, an Emmaus adaptation for older adults, hosted 35 encounters.
  • The first-ever African Leadership Development Event was held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
  • The second regional Leadership Development Event for Asian Emmaus and Chrysalis communities was held in Hong Kong.
  • Discovery, a Walk to Emmaus-inspired retreat for middle schoolers, launched in April.
  • The new Emmaus manuals were released.
  • A new community support structure was set in place, featuring Community Trainers, Community Consultants, Start-up Trainers, and 20 area Communicators to offer front-line support to community leaders.

Because of your support in prayer, finances, and volunteering, Emmaus Ministries served people here and around the world, strengthening their walk with Christ and neighbor.

Thank you for your support to the Emmaus Gift Fund, a love offering that sustains international growth.  As of December 12, $37,844 has been raised. Yet it typically takes between $60,000-$70,000 to develop one emerging community outside the United States; and by the grace of God, there are seven emerging communities. Your gift will make a significant difference in the lives of people living in Kenya, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Poland, and Bulgaria. Help us reach our 2018 goal of $140,000—funds needed for leadership training, travel expenses, and resources. Can we count on you?
“The Holy Spirit thumped me on the head, and I heard ‘be prepared to say yes,’” says Luke Anderson from the Coastal Carolina Emmaus Community, recalling how God called him to serve on the Emmaus leadership team for the second men’s Walk to Emmaus in Lagos, Nigeria. He recounts, “People embraced the Emmaus experience. There were archbishops and bishops attending as pilgrims, and they are very intent on taking Emmaus back to their communities. Lagos is the most populous city in Africa; it is so exciting to have a toehold there! God is doing a powerful thing in Lagos, and it was humbling to be a part of it.”

Send us your stories (and pictures) of helping new Emmaus communities in and outside the U.S. get off the ground. We would love to hear from you, so others will be inspired by your call to serve.

In November, the regional leaders gathered in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, to support one another and to discern a way forward. Rev. Stephane Brooks, the Spiritual Director of Emmaus Ministries, conducted the meeting and offers this reflection:

“In order to fulfill our goal of strengthening existing and emerging communities, we will be helping them to refocus on their mission and will be equipping them to reach out to, share with, and partner with five new local churches each year. We will also be recruiting and empowering lay and clergy trainers to prepare communities to renew participants and to help them grow in grace on their Fourth Day. Please pray for us.”

Meet your regional leaders. Because of the generosity of those who donate to the Emmaus Gift Fund, these regional leaders can continue to do the work that God has called them to do.
May your new year be blessed!
